    Widener University Commonwealth Law School

    History of Widener Law Commonwealth

Widener Law Commonwealth has its roots in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where a growing need for legal education in the state capital led to the founding of the school in 1989. Established as the Harrisburg campus of Widener University School of Law, it was created with the vision of providing students with direct access to the Pennsylvania State Capitol and the many opportunities available through courts, firms, and public service organizations in the region.

The law school welcomed its first students in 1989 and quickly developed a reputation for blending rigorous academics with hands-on learning. From its earliest days, the program emphasized practical training, giving students the chance to gain experience through externships, clinics, and public interest work while completing their legal education.

In 2015, the Harrisburg campus transitioned into its own separately accredited law school within Widener University and what we know today as Widener University Commonwealth Law School. This move reinforced its mission to serve the region with a personalized, practical, and professional education, while continuing to build on its established foundation.

Today, Widener Law Commonwealth continues to thrive as a vital part of Pennsylvania’s legal community. Graduates can be found across the state and beyond, working in government, courts, private practice, nonprofit organizations, and corporate settings. The school remains committed to producing lawyers who are deeply committed to our founding principles of access to justice and public service while serving their clients and communities with integrity and purpose.
